The Carrie Diaries Review – “Endgame”

She doesn’t even have Pinterest!

This is just a note to remind us all how lucky we are to live in this day-and-age. When Carrie realized all of her recipe books were mysteriously missing, normally she could just hop online to replace them. In fact, who even uses bulky recipe books anyway? Having your iPad propped up on a stand is so much easier!

Dorrit Lives Here, and she says “Pay attention to meeeee!”

Sometimes this little sister can be cruel. Like when she ruined the recipes so that Carrie couldn’t use them.  But we have to remember that Dorrit is acting out for her own reasons, not just to be a brat. Sometimes it’s hard for us to be vocal about our wants and needs, so we try to let our actions speak for us. And normally, that’d be good. I can’t remember how many times I saw the sampler that Samantha Parkington (American Girls) had made, which said, “Actions Speak Louder Than Words.” And while this may be true, sometimes – if you can muster up the emotional bravery – words are better to use. (Also in the case of violence.) This is a helpful reminder that sometimes we can all be a little like Dorrit.

Expectations can Ruin Things

Carrie wanted everything to be perfect. And that was her big mistake. Because while she tried to make herself perfect (to apron or not to apron!), her family seem perfect, and Thanksgiving perfect… they all exploded in her face. And the saddest thing is, that George wasn’t expecting perfection. Carrie had, instead, placed the idea in her head that he wanted it. Meanwhile, he was as low key and laid back as a guy could be. Because if you pull back to think about it, a teenage boy doesn’t really care about Thanksgiving looking Martha Stewart perfect. Plus, with the spotlight effect, we all think people are as hyper-aware about things going on around us as we are. But they aren’t. So she nearly ruined her day, based on things that George was never thinking of expecting.

And Carrie also wanted all that perfection, but she would do good to remember that perfection isn’t possible. It just isn’t. And the idea of being perfect will actually paralyze you! Perfection (like drugs): don’t do it!
